How to Improve Your MPG!

With gas prices starting to creep up again and everyone keeping an eye on their wallets here are five great tips on how to increase your fuel economy, outside of buying a new vehicle which will always improve your MPG.

Regular maintenance

A car in poor running condition will use more gas than one that has been tuned up. By simply changing your oil and air filters every 3,000 miles your MPG will increase greatly. A dirty air filter can reduce gas mileage up to 20%. Also note that spark plugs in poor condition can reduce gas mileage up to 12%.

It’s all about your tires

Underinflated tires aren’t just dangerous; they ruin your MPG by as much as 25%. You should check your tires once a month when they are cold. Overinflated tires aren’t efficient, either. Also keep your tires balanced and in alignment.

Take off the surfboard rack, it’s winter!

About half of your vehicle’s energy is expended overcoming air resistance. (The other half is expended in acceleration.) Reduce your car’s workload, remove anything that might cause drag: luggage racks, bike racks, ski racks, etc.

Got junk in your trunk?

Are you carrying around extra stuff in your trunk? If you do not need to carry those items then get rid of them. Extra weight means extra work your engine has to do and that spells lowered MPG every time.

Driving habits

Without a doubt the best way to increase your MPG is just simply to adjust the way you drive.  Quick acceleration is half the expenditure of your fuel. So accelerate slowly and brake over a longer distance. Keeping a steady speed will also keep your fuel consumption low. If you car has cruise control use it!  This will take the human factor out and keep you at a constant speed.  Remember, everything over 60 MPH is costing you in gas consumption.

If you have more questions about how you can get more from a tank of gas ask any one of the Service Advisors at Fontana Nissan at 1-888-808-9974. For a free 24 point MPG inspection coupon click here and to set up an appointment to have your vehicle serviced click here.

The Nissan Leaf, the Electric That’s Leading the Race

Nissan has been in the driver’s seat for some time with electric car technology and the technology will come together in the form of the 2011 Nissan Leaf, which will go on sale in 2010. This much anticipated full production electric car will be the first by any major manufacturer to be on the road. Designed specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, the Nissan LEAF is a medium-size hatchback that comfortably seats five adults and has a range of more than 100 miles.

The Nissan LEAF is powered by laminated compact lithium-ion batteries, which generate power output of over 90kW, while its electric motor delivers 80kW/280Nm. This ensures a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that is in keeping with what consumers have come to expect from traditional, gasoline-powered automobiles. Pricing details will be announced closer to start of sales in late 2010; however, the company expects the car to be competitively priced in the range of a well-equipped segment vehicle. Additionally, Nissan LEAF is expected to qualify for an array of significant local, regional and national tax breaks and incentives in markets around the world.  As an added benefit, because the vehicle has less mechanical complexity than a traditional gasoline-powered car, the Nissan LEAF is designed to be friendly to the wallet as well as to the environment.

Unlike internal-combustion engine (ICE) equipped vehicles, Nissan LEAF’s power train has no tail pipe, and thus no emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases.  A combination of Nissan LEAF’s regenerative braking system and innovative lithium-ion battery packs enables the car to deliver a driving range of more than 100 miles on one full charge. Nissan’s approach makes charging easy and convenient. Nissan LEAF can be charged up to 80% of its full capacity in just under 30 minutes with a quick charger.  Charging at home through a 200V outlet is estimated to take approximately eight hours – ample time to enable an overnight refresh for consumer and car alike.

If you have questions about the Nissan Leaf and its availability call Fontana Nissan at 1-888-808-9974.  You can also learn more by clicking here or you can e-mail Fontana Nissan by clicking here.

Take Care of Your Tires and They’ll Take Care of You

Having the right and a well maintained tire will keep your vehicle performing at its best, insure your safety and save you money! The key to tires has always been two-fold; make sure you buy the right tire and make sure you maintain the tire.

First, make sure the tire you buy is the right size and made by a respected manufacturer. Tires aren’t something you want to skimp on. The amount of money you’ll save by getting a cheap tire will be used up once you’re stranded with a blow out somewhere. You can always ask any Service Advisor at Fontana Nissan if you have any questions on sizes or manufacturers. Once you have purchased the right tire, maintenance of those tires is paramount. Keeping your tires in good shape will not only add better handling to your car it will also save you money in the long run by increasing your fuel consumption and by not having to purchases tires as often.

Keep your tires inflated to the correct levels – This seems like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised by how few people even own a tire pressure gauge. This should be checked once a month and done when your tires are cold.

Tire Depth – You may not own a depth gauge so a great way to make sure you have enough depth in your tire (especially important with low profile tires) is to take penny and stick Lincoln’s head into the tread. If you can see any space between his hair and the tire you don’t have enough depth and it’s time for new tires.

Rotate Your Tires – Tires do not wear evenly so to lengthen the life of your tires rotate them from back to front. Keep in mind on some models the sizes may be different and can’t be rotated.  Check the tire sizes or with a Service Advisor to make sure.

Tire Balance – If you notice any vibration you need to get the tires balanced again. This can be done at Fontana Nissan very easily.

Four Wheel Alignment – This should be done once a year or whenever you replace your tires. A proper alignment will insure that the car handles as designed and will help the tire to wear evenly thus prolonging their service life.

If you have more questions about the tires on your vehicle, please call Fontana Nissan and one of our highly trained Service Advisors will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have at 1-888-808-9974. If you would like one of Fontana Nissan's Service Advisors to take a look at your tires, click here for a free tire inspection coupon or you can click here to set up an appointment with the Fontana Nissan service department.

The All-New 370Z

The all All-New 370 has been redesigned in a dramatic fashion and has been overwhelming well received by casual fans and enthusiasts alike. The 370Z replaced the 350Z in 2008, continuing the success of Nissan’s celebrated sports car series. The base model comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, but a 7-speed automatic is also available. The 370Z comes with a 332 horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine and yields 26 miles per gallon on the highway. Notably, the 6-speed offers a synchronized downshift rev matching system, the first vehicle to offer such a technology. The Touring model comes with more features including heated seats, Bluetooth, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and aluminum pedals, among others. The 370Z’s styling evolves from that of the 350Z. Performance-wise, since it rides on a shorter wheelbase and uses more lightweight materials hence netting a lighter curb weight, the 370Z is much improved in all aspects: cornering, acceleration, and braking. Two other model variations are also available: the Roadster, featuring a fully automatic cloth top, and a NISMO model, which offers 350 horsepower, a racing-inspired exterior and interior design, and lightweight alloy wheels. Beginning in the spring of 2010, a special 40th Anniversary Edition will be available featuring distinct styling such as red leather seats, special seatback embroidery, exterior badging and more. In December 2009, the 370Z was named Best Resale Value in its class by Kelley Blue Book, recognizing the vehicle’s ability to retain its value. Fontana Nissan has plenty of 370Z in its inventory. Got a Vehicle Fluid Leak?  What to Do

Fluid lubricates the numerous moving metal parts in your car, and lots of moving metal parts means many kinds of different fluids. Because fluids differ in smell, color, and texture, finding the source of a leak can be easy once you know what to look for. Common fluids found beneath your car include:

Water – Normally this comes from the AC or defroster system and is the most common fluid you may find. The drip can usually be found under the center right or center left of the vehicle. This is normal and should not cause alarm.

Engine oil – This tends to be slippery, light to dark brown or even black in color and usually has a “burnt rubber” smell. Locate the engine oil dipstick in your vehicle to check your oil level. If the oil level is low but still registers on the dipstick, top off the oil as soon as you have the opportunity. If the oil level does not register on the dipstick at all, make sure to add engine oil just enough to reach the full level on the dipstick before driving. It is important not to overfill. Overfilling can cause more harm than not having enough oil does.

Coolant – Coolant is usually watery and slippery to the touch and can be light green, yellow, pink, blue, or purple. The drip is commonly found near the front of the engine or underneath the vehicle’s radiator. Once the engine has cooled down, check the fluid levels in the radiator and coolant tank. If they are low, top off with distilled water. Don’t use tap water as it has minerals that can lead to cooling system corrosion. Be aware that loss of coolant is the number one cause of serious engine damage so if you keep losing fluid contact our service department.

If you have any problems with leaks please contact our service department.
